Incredible Hero Recognized for his Ability to help others suffering from Multiple Sclerosis
Mooresville, NC (June 16, 2009) – When Milwaukee-area attorney Jeffrey Gingold was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS) in 1996, doctors told him the potentially debilitating autoimmune disorder could cause numbness and a long list of other physical symptoms. But they never mentioned it also could affect his thinking and memory.
For Gingold, the terrifying moment came as he was about to present arguments in a client’s court case and he couldn’t recognize her or remember the details of the case.
According to the Mayo Clinic, in multiple sclerosis, the body’s immune system eats away at the protective covering on the nerves. That interferes with the communication between the brain and the rest of the body.
Symptoms are “different for every MS patient but about half of MS patients experience cognitive challenges,” Gingold said.
The difficulties he faced at that hearing were “sort of the slap-in-the-face moment,” Gingold said. But he’d had other instances of memory problems or trouble thinking that he’d chalked up to stress.
Shortly thereafter, Gingold decided he could no longer practice law.
Gingold began looking into the cognitive changes patients with multiple sclerosis can face and found little information for patients, so he decided to write “Facing the Cognitive Challenges of Multiple Sclerosis” to help others. Last year, he published “Mental Sharpening Stones: Manage the Cognitive Challenge of Multiple Sclerosis.”
“I call it a blessing to be able to share and discuss something so relevant to others facing MS,” Gingold said.
For his courage to fight a debilitating disease and his selflessness to help others, Gingold will be recognized as this week’s Incredible Hero.
The Incredible Heroes are extended an invite to attend the NASCAR Nationwide Series race as guests of CJM Racing and the America’s Incredible Pizza Company. Each hero receives a plaque in recognition of their heroism and they spend a VIP day at the race track.
